About Varða

Varða Research is a research firm dedicated to stewarding and activating institutional histories. Working at the intersection of archival research and public engagement, Varða supports cultural organizations, academic institutions, foundations, brands, and corporate organizations in activating their historical legacy to advance institutional objectives and enhance public reach.

The name Varða derives from the Icelandic word for a cairn — a stone marker used for wayfinding across rugged terrain. Like a cairn, Varða Research provides structure and direction where documentation is fragmented, histories are incomplete, or institutional memory requires careful interpretation.

Varða’s work centers on four areas: archival and collections documentation, provenance and acquisition research, institutional and brand narrative development, and interpretive and educational strategy. Whether documenting the evolution of an organization, preparing engaging milestone programs for brands, or developing exhibitions and public-facing narratives, Varða approaches each project with care.

Founded by Emma Yeager, Varða Research draws on her academic and institutional experience across the globe, including invited research presentations at Yale University, University of Iceland, and the Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures (ISAC). Trained at the University of Chicago, she brings a commitment to analytical research and long-term stewardship of institutional memory.
